Knowing which machine, lance, nozzle, and attachment to use — and when — is what separates a professional result from an average one. This module covers the full equipment range and the decision-making behind selecting the right tool for every job.
Professional pressure washing equipment falls into clear categories: the machine itself, the delivery system (hose, lance, trigger gun), the nozzle or attachment at the end, and the ancillary accessories that support the job. Understanding each category — and the decisions within it — is what allows you to arrive on site and set up correctly every time, regardless of what the job demands.
Most new operators start with one machine and one surface cleaner and learn as they go. That works up to a point. The problem comes when they encounter a surface, a contamination type, or a job size that their default setup does not suit — and they either push on with the wrong tool or turn the work away. This module is designed to prevent both outcomes.
The most common entry point for domestic pressure washing operators. Electric cold water machines are compact, quiet, and require no fuel. They are suited to domestic driveways, patios, decking, fencing, and general exterior cleaning where contamination is primarily biological — algae, moss, lichen, atmospheric soiling, and surface dirt. They are not effective on oil, grease, or heavy industrial contamination without a pre-treatment chemical to break down the soil first.
Petrol machines offer higher output than most electric equivalents and are fully portable — no mains power required. This makes them the preferred choice for operators working on sites without a convenient power supply: large driveways, rural properties, commercial yards, and car parks. Flow rates are typically higher than electric machines at the same pressure, which improves cleaning efficiency on large flat surfaces.
Hot water pressure washers heat the water to between 60°C and 80°C using a diesel or oil burner integrated into the machine. The addition of heat dramatically increases cleaning effectiveness on oil, grease, food contamination, and biological soiling. For commercial kitchen areas, food preparation surfaces, loading bays, and fleet washing, a hot water machine is not a luxury — it is the correct tool for the job.
Hot water vs chemical pre-treatment: On domestic jobs where you only have a cold water machine, a quality degreaser or biocide pre-treatment applied with correct dwell time will compensate significantly for the absence of heat. Hot water is more effective, but a well-chosen chemical applied correctly closes much of the gap on most domestic contamination types.
The hose connects the machine to the trigger gun. Standard professional hoses are rated to handle the machine's maximum pressure output with a safety margin. Key considerations are length, bore diameter, and condition. A damaged or kinked hose is a safety risk — high-pressure water injection injuries are serious and can occur through pinhole leaks in worn hose. Inspect hose before every job.
The trigger gun is the control point between the hose and the lance. Releasing the trigger closes the flow and engages the machine's bypass system. Never leave a running machine with the trigger locked open and unattended — water hammer and pump damage can result. Always use a trigger gun with a safety lock to prevent accidental discharge when moving between areas.
The lance is the rigid extension between the trigger gun and the nozzle. Standard lances are 50–100cm in length. Longer lances reduce operator fatigue on large flat areas and improve standoff distance control. Shorter lances give better precision on detailed work. Curved or angled lances are available for working under vehicles, in gutters, and on overhead surfaces.
Lance safety: Never use a lance without checking the nozzle is securely fitted first. A nozzle ejecting from a pressurised lance is a serious projectile risk. Always fit and check nozzles before connecting to a running machine, and always point the lance away from people and glazing when the trigger is engaged.
The nozzle determines how the pressure and flow are delivered to the surface. It is the variable most frequently changed on site and the one most directly responsible for surface damage when selected incorrectly.

The nozzle selection rule: Always start with a wider degree nozzle than you think you need, and move narrower only if the result requires it. It is significantly easier to increase cleaning intensity than to repair damage caused by starting too aggressive.
The rotary surface cleaner is the single most important attachment for any operator working on domestic driveways, patios, and paths. It consists of a circular shroud housing a rotating bar with two nozzles. As the bar rotates, the nozzles clean the surface in overlapping passes, producing an even result without the tramlines that a trigger lance always creates on flat surfaces.

The right starting setup for most domestic operators entering the trade is straightforward. You do not need every accessory immediately — you need the core kit that handles the majority of jobs you will actually encounter in your first year.
The upgrade path: Start with electric if budget is the constraint. Add a petrol machine when job volume justifies it. Add a hot water machine when you are regularly taking on commercial grease or fleet washing work. Buy accessories as the specific job requires them — not speculatively. A gutter cleaning wand pays for itself the first time you quote a gutter clear as an add-on to a driveway job.
