Health & Safety — PPE, Risk Assessment & Safe Working Practice

Pressure washing carries real injury risks that are entirely preventable with the right knowledge and habits. This module covers everything you are legally and professionally required to have in place before you start any job.

Health & Safety Is Not Optional — It Is Your Legal Baseline

As a self-employed operator or business owner, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 applies to you. You have a legal duty to protect yourself, your employees (if any), and any members of the public who may be affected by your work. This is not a box-ticking exercise — it is the framework that determines your liability if something goes wrong on site.

The good news is that pressure washing is a manageable risk activity. The hazards are well understood, the controls are straightforward, and a professional operator who follows correct procedure is very unlikely to cause harm to themselves or anyone else. This module gives you that procedure.

The practical reality: Most pressure washing injuries happen to operators who are in a hurry, working without PPE because it is inconvenient, or who have never been formally told what the risks are. This module exists so that you cannot claim the latter — and so you have the knowledge to avoid the former.

PPE — What You Need and Why

High-pressure injection injury: This is the most serious injury risk in pressure washing. A high-pressure water jet directed at skin — even briefly — can inject water, bacteria, and debris deep into tissue. Injuries can appear minor at the surface and cause serious internal damage. Never direct a lance at yourself or anyone else, and never test pressure with your hand. Any suspected injection injury requires immediate hospital treatment, not first aid.

Site Risk Assessment

A risk assessment is a structured review of the hazards present on a site and the controls you will put in place to manage them. For domestic pressure washing, this does not need to be a lengthy document — but it does need to happen before you start work, and it should be recorded for any commercial job or any job where you identify a significant hazard.

The five steps of a basic risk assessment

  • 1. Identify the hazards — what could cause harm? Slippery surfaces, passing pedestrians, parked vehicles, overhead cables, uneven ground, chemicals in use.
  • 2. Decide who might be harmed — yourself, the client, neighbours, passing members of the public, pets.
  • 3. Evaluate the risks and decide on controls — for each hazard, what is the likelihood and severity, and what will you do to reduce the risk?
  • 4. Record your findings — on any commercial job, write it down. A simple site-specific record is sufficient.
  • 5. Review and update — if conditions change during the job, reassess. A dry day becoming wet, or a pedestrian area becoming busy, changes the risk profile.

Common hazards on a domestic pressure washing site

COSHH — Control of Substances Hazardous to Health

If you use any cleaning chemical on a job — biocide, degreaser, acid cleaner, or pre-treatment — you are legally required to assess the risk of that substance under COSHH regulations. This does not require a specialist — it requires you to read the product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and apply the controls it specifies.

What a COSHH assessment covers

  • What the substance is and what it contains
  • What harm it can cause — skin, eye, respiratory, environmental
  • Who may be exposed — you, the client, members of the public
  • What PPE and handling controls are required
  • What to do in case of accidental exposure or spillage
  • How to store and dispose of the product correctly

Where to get the Safety Data Sheet: Every professional cleaning chemical supplier is legally required to provide an SDS for each product. It is usually available on their website or on request. Read the SDS before using any new product for the first time. The PPE section tells you exactly what you need to wear — do not guess.

Chemicals most commonly used in pressure washing

  • Sodium hypochlorite (bleach-based biocide) — effective on algae, moss, lichen. Corrosive to skin and eyes, toxic to aquatic life. Requires eye protection, gloves, and careful drainage management.
  • Alkaline degreasers — used for oil and grease contamination. Can cause skin irritation and eye damage. Nitrile gloves and eye protection required.
  • Acidic surface cleaners — used for mineral staining, rust, and efflorescence. Corrosive — full face shield, chemical-resistant gloves, and protective clothing required.
  • Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) — biocidal pre-treatments. Moderate hazard — gloves and eye protection required. Toxic to aquatic life.

Electrical Safety

Electric pressure washers introduce the specific hazard of electrical equipment operating in a wet environment. This combination requires specific controls that must be in place on every job.

  • RCD protection — always use a Residual Current Device (RCD) between the mains supply and your machine. A portable RCD plug adaptor costs under £20 and can prevent electrocution. This is non-negotiable.
  • Cable inspection — inspect the power cable before every job. Any damage, kinking, or exposed conductor means the machine does not go on site that day.
  • Extension cables — use only outdoor-rated extension cables of the correct current rating for your machine. Domestic indoor extension reels are not suitable. Keep the cable drum fully unrolled to prevent heat build-up.
  • Connections off the ground — never leave electrical connections resting in standing water. Use cable tidies or hang connections off the ground where possible.

Setting Up a Safe Working Area

Before you start the machine, take five minutes to set up the site correctly. This is not about bureaucracy — it is about ensuring that nothing unexpected can cause harm while you are focused on the job.

  • Walk the full area to be cleaned and identify trip hazards, loose items, and anything that could be damaged by overspray
  • Move or sheet any vehicles, garden furniture, or planted pots in the overspray zone
  • Warn the client that the area will be wet and slippery during and after the job
  • If the site is accessible to the public or neighbours, use cones or barriers to define the working area
  • Check where runoff water will flow — ensure it is not going into a storm drain if you are using chemicals
  • Confirm your electrical supply is RCD protected and all connections are secure before powering on

The pre-job five minutes: A proper site setup takes five minutes and prevents the majority of on-site incidents. Operators who skip it because they are in a hurry are the ones who damage a client's car with overspray, trip over a hose, or get a complaint about chemical runoff into next door's garden. Five minutes at the start of every job is the cheapest insurance you have.
