Decking & Timber Cleaning

Timber is the highest-risk common surface in pressure washing. Get it wrong and the damage is immediate and irreversible. This module covers grain raising, correct pressure and angle, pre-treatment options, post-clean advice, and how to manage client expectations on a surface that demands care.

Why Timber Is the Highest-Risk Common Surface

Every surface in pressure washing carries some risk of damage if the wrong method is applied. Timber is different — it is the one surface where damage can happen instantly, is immediately visible, and cannot be undone. Raised grain, splintered fibres, furring across the boards — these are not marks that fade or blend in over time. They are permanent changes to the surface structure of the wood.

This does not mean timber cannot be cleaned with a pressure washer. It means it must be cleaned with the right technique, at the right pressure, with the right nozzle, at the right angle, moving in the right direction. Every one of those variables matters. Get one wrong on a concrete driveway and you might leave a faint mark. Get one wrong on softwood decking and you have a problem that no amount of explanation will resolve.

Before you quote a decking job: Assess the condition of the timber first. Old, weathered, or already damaged decking is significantly more vulnerable than newer boards. If the wood is soft, splintered, or partially rotten, pressure washing will accelerate the damage — and you will own the outcome regardless of what caused the underlying condition. Be prepared to decline or significantly limit the scope on decking that is already in poor condition.

Softwood vs Hardwood — Why It Changes Your Approach

Softwood decking

The majority of residential decking in the UK is softwood — most commonly treated pine or spruce. Softwood is more porous, more absorbent, and significantly more vulnerable to pressure damage than hardwood. The wood fibres are less dense, which means high pressure or an incorrect angle tears them rather than cleaning them. Softwood decking cleaned at too high a pressure will show raised grain, furring, and a rough, splintered surface texture that is unpleasant underfoot and visually obvious.

Hardwood decking

Hardwood decking — iroko, ipe, oak, teak — is denser, more durable, and more tolerant of pressure washing than softwood. It still requires correct technique, but the margin for error is wider. Hardwood also tends to be significantly more expensive, which means the consequences of getting it wrong are proportionally greater. Assess hardwood decking as carefully as softwood — the increased durability does not make it immune to damage.

Composite decking: Composite decking is not timber — it is a wood-plastic composite. It is generally more tolerant of pressure washing than softwood, but manufacturer guidance varies significantly. Some composites are sensitive to high heat (relevant if using a hot water machine) and some have surface coatings that can be damaged by incorrect chemical use. Check manufacturer guidance before applying any chemical pre-treatment to composite decking.

Grain Raising — What It Is and How to Minimise It

Grain raising is what happens when water penetrates the surface fibres of timber and causes them to swell and lift. On a finely sanded surface, this produces a rough, fuzzy texture. On pressure-washed decking, it produces a surface that looks and feels worse after cleaning than it did before — which is exactly the complaint you want to avoid.

Some degree of grain raising is unavoidable when pressure washing timber — water will always cause some fibre movement. The goal is to minimise it, not eliminate it. The variables you control are:

  • Pressure — lower pressure means less mechanical force on the fibres. Stay at or below 1,000 PSI for softwood.
  • Nozzle angle — a wider fan angle (40°) distributes the impact across a larger area and reduces the force per square centimetre compared to a 15° or 25° nozzle.
  • Standoff distance — further from the surface means lower impact. For timber, work at 300–400mm minimum standoff, further if you see grain lifting.
  • Cleaning direction — always clean with the grain, never across it. Cleaning across the grain tears fibres. Cleaning with the grain follows the natural direction of the wood structure and produces a cleaner result with less damage.
  • Speed of movement — keep the lance moving at a steady pace. Pausing over one spot concentrates pressure and causes immediate localised damage.

Correct Pressure, Nozzle, and Angle for Timber

Nozzle selection

Use a 40° nozzle for the main clean on softwood decking. This is the widest standard fan angle and produces the least concentrated impact. A 25° nozzle is acceptable on hardwood. Never use a 15° or 0° nozzle on timber — the concentrated stream will cause immediate, visible damage.

Pressure setting

If your machine has a variable pressure regulator, reduce pressure to the minimum effective level for the contamination you are dealing with. For lightly soiled softwood, 600–800 PSI is often sufficient. For heavier biological growth, you may need up to 1,000 PSI — but test on an inconspicuous area first and assess the result before proceeding across the whole surface.

Angle

Hold the lance at approximately 45° to the surface — not perpendicular. A perpendicular angle drives water directly into the grain and maximises fibre disruption. An angled approach drives water along the surface, lifting contamination without forcing it deep into the wood structure.

Never use a rotary surface cleaner on timber decking. The concentrated rotating jets of a surface cleaner produce intense, localised pressure that will immediately damage softwood and leave visible circular marks across the boards. Surface cleaners are for flat hard surfaces — concrete, block paving, stone. They have no place on timber.

Pre-Treatment for Decking

Green algae

Green algae is the most common biological contamination on decking — the green or grey-green slippery film that develops on shaded or damp surfaces. A biocide or algaecide pre-treatment applied 10–15 minutes before pressure washing will kill the algae at a cellular level and make it significantly easier to remove cleanly. Apply by pump sprayer, allow to dwell without drying out, then pressure wash in the direction of the grain.

Black spot

Black spot on decking is typically caused by a different organism to the black spot found on paving. On timber it is most commonly a fungal growth — dark speckled marks embedded into the surface of the wood. Standard biocide pre-treatment will reduce it but may not eliminate it entirely, particularly on older staining that has penetrated the wood surface. Set client expectations before you start — black spot on timber that has been present for more than one season may not lift completely.

Oil and tannin staining

Decking oil that has been over-applied, spilled, or has gone rancid requires a dedicated timber degreaser rather than a general-purpose degreaser. Tannin staining — the dark streaks caused by metal fixings reacting with the natural tannins in hardwood — requires an oxalic acid based treatment. Neither of these is within standard pressure washing scope for a new operator. If you encounter them, note them in your pre-clean assessment and exclude them from your quoted scope.

Cleaning Pattern and Technique

Always work in the direction of the grain — along the length of the boards, not across them. Start at the end of the decking furthest from your exit point and work back towards it, so you are not walking on the wet, newly cleaned surface.

Work in manageable sections — approximately one board width at a time — with overlapping passes along the length of each board. Keep the lance moving at a consistent pace. The result should be uniform across the full width and length of each board, with no visible lines between passes.

Test area first: Before cleaning the whole surface, test your pressure, nozzle, and technique on an inconspicuous area — under a piece of furniture, at the far end of the decking, or at the back of a step. Assess the result before proceeding. If grain is visibly raised after your test, reduce pressure or increase standoff distance before going further.

Wet Timber — Slip Risk During and After Cleaning

Wet timber is extremely slippery — significantly more so than wet concrete or paving. This is a safety issue for you during the clean and for the client after you have finished.

During the clean, wear footwear with a sole rated for wet surfaces. Do not rush across wet decking boards. Be aware that the cleaning process itself — removing the surface layer of algae and biological growth — can make the surface temporarily more slippery before it dries, not less.

After the clean, advise the client clearly: do not use the decking until it is completely dry. Wet cleaned decking is a slip hazard. If the client has children or elderly family members, this is not a suggestion — it is safety-critical information.

Post-Clean Sealing — Is It Within Your Scope?

Clients frequently ask about sealing or oiling their decking after cleaning. This is a separate service from pressure washing, requires different products, different equipment, and crucially requires the timber to be completely dry before application — which typically means 24–48 hours after cleaning in UK weather conditions.

If you offer sealing as an add-on

Be clear in your quote that sealing is a return visit, not same-day. Applying decking oil or sealant to damp timber traps moisture in the wood, causes the product to fail prematurely, and can produce a blotchy, uneven finish. If a client asks you to seal on the same day as cleaning, decline — it will not work and you will own the result.

If you do not offer sealing

Recommend it and explain why it matters. Cleaned and unsealed softwood decking will recolonise with algae and biological growth within one season in most UK climates. A quality decking oil or sealant significantly extends the period before the next clean is needed and protects the timber from water ingress and UV damage. If you have a relationship with a specialist who offers this service, a referral is a professional outcome for the client and a goodwill gesture that gets remembered.

When to Decline a Decking Job

Not every decking job should be taken on. There are conditions where pressure washing will cause more harm than good, and where the professional decision is to decline the work rather than proceed and manage the consequences.

  • Visibly rotten or structurally compromised boards — pressure washing will accelerate decay and may cause boards to fail underfoot. This is a safety issue, not just a quality issue.
  • Existing severe grain raising or splintering — the surface is already damaged. Further pressure washing will not improve it and may worsen it.
  • Decking with an intact, professionally applied coating or treatment — if the surface has been recently oiled or sealed, pressure washing will strip the treatment. Discuss with the client before proceeding.
  • Unknown composite materials — if you cannot identify the material and cannot find manufacturer guidance, the risk of damage is unquantifiable. Decline until you can get the information you need.

Declining professionally: Telling a client you will not clean their decking because it is not in a condition to be cleaned safely is a professional outcome, not a lost job. Explain what you have found, what the risk is, and what they should do — replace the affected boards, let it dry out, get a structural assessment. A client who receives honest advice will remember you. A client whose decking you damaged trying to make the job work will not come back.
