Introduction to Professional Upholstery Cleaning
What upholstery cleaning involves, the dirt you will meet, and how cleaning products, movement, temperature and time work together. Learn why checking the furniture comes first.
CCMTec⢠Academy · Written online course
Learn how to check a sofa or chair, choose a suitable cleaning method and work through the job in the right order. Written for people who are new to upholstery cleaning, and cleaners who want to fill gaps in what they know.
Start with the furniture, not the machine
Two sofas can look alike but need different treatment. The fabric, colour, cushion filling and parts underneath the cover all matter. So do existing damage, earlier cleaning and the type of dirt or stain.
This online upholstery cleaning course connects those checks to the practical job. It covers products, equipment, cleaning methods, stain treatment, drying and the final conversation with your customer. Technical words are explained as you meet them.
Who it is for
This is written online training, not a video course or a practical test with a trainer watching you work.
It helps you understand what to do and why. You also need practice with the equipment and someone suitably experienced to check your technique before you take on work beyond your ability.
Some fabrics, finishes and damaged items need specialist help. The course does not make every piece of furniture suitable for you to clean.
What is included
Start with the basic checks. Then learn about the products and tools before bringing the steps together in a complete cleaning job.
What upholstery cleaning involves, the dirt you will meet, and how cleaning products, movement, temperature and time work together. Learn why checking the furniture comes first.
Common natural and man-made fibres, fabric labels and useful identification checks. Understand what those checks can tell you, what they cannot prove, and why colour testing matters.
Look beyond the outer cover. Learn about cushion fillings, linings, frames and attachments, and how these affect cleaning, moisture and drying.
Understand what cleaning products do, how to measure and mix them, and how to choose a suitable product. Learn what pH means and why it is only one part of the decision.
Check the work area, control chemical risks and protect yourself and other people. Learn about protective equipment, electrical checks, lifting and dealing with accidents.
Extraction machines, upholstery hand tools, sprayers, brushes, mitts and drying equipment. Learn their purpose, preparation, checks, care and common faults.
Work through the job from inspection to handover. Cover preparation, cleaning technique, moisture control and drying, with alternative methods and a worked suite-cleaning example.
A careful spotting process for common stains. Learn about colour movement, brown marks, watermarks and stains that return during drying, and when further treatment could cause damage.
Ask useful questions, explain likely results, work out your costs and give a clear quote. Cover customer handover, aftercare and handling concerns professionally.
Learning outcomes
The aim is to help you plan a careful job, explain your choices and recognise when you need more information or practical help.
Your instructor
Mick Bullous, founder of CCMTec, built this course from 35 years of professional carpet and upholstery cleaning experience.
The subjects follow the decisions cleaners face on real jobs: what to check, which method to choose, what may go wrong and what to explain to the customer.
āChemicals change, machines improve, techniques evolve. But how you treat people and how you run your business? That's timeless.ā
Mick Bullous
