Bird Fouling & Guano Removal — Course Terms & Conditions
Bird Fouling & Guano Removal
Course Terms & Conditions
Before you begin this course, you must read and accept these terms in full. This is not a standard cleaning course. The work covered in this training involves exposure to biological hazards that can cause serious illness and death. Please read every section carefully.
This course covers biohazard remediation work. Bird and pigeon fouling contains live pathogens including Cryptococcus neoformans, Chlamydophila psittaci (Psittacosis), Histoplasma capsulatum, and Salmonella. Exposure to dried guano — particularly when disturbed during cleaning — can cause severe respiratory illness, systemic infection, and in serious cases, death.
This is not theoretical risk. People have died from inadequate protection during guano removal. The purpose of this course is to ensure that does not happen to you, your colleagues, or your customers.
1. Nature of This Course
This course provides professional training in the safe assessment, removal, decontamination, and disposal of bird and pigeon fouling. It covers biological hazard identification, PPE and RPE selection and use, biocidal treatment, waste handling, and UK legal compliance.
The content is designed for trained cleaning professionals, facilities managers, and property maintenance contractors operating in the United Kingdom. It is not suitable for members of the general public attempting DIY removal of bird fouling.
2. Biological Hazard Acknowledgement
By accepting these terms, you acknowledge that:
- Bird and pigeon guano is a Category 2 biological agent under the COSHH Regulations 2002
- Dried guano produces airborne spores and particles that can cause serious respiratory and systemic illness if inhaled or ingested
- Psittacosis (Chlamydophila psittaci) is a notifiable disease in the United Kingdom — you have a legal obligation to report suspected cases to Public Health England
- Inadequate PPE, incorrect donning/doffing procedure, or failure to follow safe working protocols can result in serious illness or death
- You are responsible for your own health and safety and that of anyone present on a site where you are working
3. Legal Obligations
This course covers your legal obligations under the following UK legislation. Completion of this course does not exempt you from compliance — it is your responsibility to ensure you meet all legal requirements before undertaking guano removal work:
- Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH)
- Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999
- Environmental Protection Act 1990 — controlled waste handling and disposal
- Control of Pollution Act 1974
- Health Protection (Notification) Regulations 2010 — notifiable diseases
- HSE guidance on biological agents at work
Failure to comply with these regulations is a criminal offence. HSE enforcement action, prosecution, unlimited fines, and civil liability for injury or illness caused to third parties are all possible consequences of non-compliance. This course will teach you what compliance looks like — but the responsibility for compliance is yours alone.
4. PPE & RPE Requirements
You must not undertake bird fouling removal work without the correct personal protective equipment and respiratory protective equipment. This course specifies the minimum standards required. Key requirements include:
- FFP3 respirator — FFP2 is not sufficient for this work. This is covered in full in Module 3.
- Disposable coveralls (Type 5/6 minimum)
- Nitrile gloves, eye protection, and boot covers
- Correct donning and doffing sequence — getting this wrong defeats the purpose of wearing PPE
By accepting these terms, you commit to using the correct PPE and RPE on every job, without exception.
5. Limitations of This Course
This course provides comprehensive professional training. It does not:
- Replace hands-on supervised experience on your first guano removal jobs
- Constitute a licence to operate — there is no statutory licence required for guano removal in the UK, but you must comply with all relevant legislation
- Cover working at height beyond an introductory level — if your work involves roof access, you must hold appropriate working at height training (PASMA, IPAF, or equivalent)
- Provide medical advice — if you believe you have been exposed to a biological hazard, seek medical attention immediately and inform your GP of the nature of the exposure
6. Liability
CCMTec LTD provides this course for educational and training purposes only. While every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the content, CCMTec LTD accepts no liability for:
- Any illness, injury, or death arising from the application or misapplication of techniques taught in this course
- Any legal consequences arising from non-compliance with UK legislation
- Any damage to property arising from the use of chemicals, equipment, or methods described in this course
- Any loss of income or business arising from reliance on information contained in this course
The information in this course is provided in good faith as professional guidance. It is your responsibility to assess each job individually, apply your professional judgement, and comply with all applicable legislation.
7. Health Declaration
If you have a compromised immune system, chronic respiratory condition, or any health condition that may increase your vulnerability to biological agents, you should seek medical advice before undertaking guano removal work. Immunocompromised individuals face significantly elevated risk from the pathogens present in bird fouling. This course will explain why — but the decision to undertake this work is yours and should be made in consultation with your GP.
