Found Needles & Sharps: What Cleaners Must Do

You spot a syringe beside a sofa, or a pointed object protruding from a waste bag. The client asks you to put it in the rubbish and carry on. This course teaches the cleaner's response: stop the affected work, leave the item undisturbed, protect access and arrange the appropriate response without taking on sharps collection.

Suitable for domestic, end-of-tenancy and commercial cleaners, self-employed cleaners and supervisors. No previous sharps-handling experience is required. This is discovery and response training, not a collection demonstration.

Six practical modules

• Recognise a sharp: identify the stop point without touching, searching waste or moving furniture to investigate.
• Stop and protect access: pause affected tasks, warn others and preserve usable escape routes.
• Report and arrange a response: give precise locations, separate observations from uncertainty and handle unavailable contacts or client pressure.
• Hand over to qualified collection: explain the concerns and confirm the response scope without becoming part of handling or transport.
• Respond to injury or exposure: learn HSE-supported immediate wound-care and eye or mouth water-wash steps, seek urgent medical advice and report without delaying care.
• Check before restarting: compare the actual response with the cleaning tasks, record unresolved concerns and review the work arrangements.

Scenario assessment and completion certificate

Ten scenario questions assess the decisions taught in the modules. The pass mark is seven out of ten (70%), with explanations after submission. A course-completion certificate is available after passing. Lessons contain ordered steps, worked examples and practical checks, with no separate handouts to download.

Important scope and limitations

This online course does not train or authorise you to search for, collect, package, transport or dispose of sharps. It is not first-aid certification, medical advice, an externally accredited qualification or evidence of supervised practical competence. It does not qualify you to certify a property free of sharps.

Follow the applicable employer and site procedures and remain within your competence and authorisation. After suspected injury or exposure, seek urgent appropriate medical advice. Removal of one visible item does not establish that the whole property is ready for cleaning.
